The Cartridge
The Royex Generation II cartridge is a non-detonating rock breaking cartridge. It is classified as a pyrotechnic and holds a 1.4S transport classification. In the European Union, the cartridge is classified as a P2 product, under the European directive for pyrotechnical articles, by the BAM institute in Berlin, Germany.

The cartridge consists of a plastic housing containing a non-explosive propellant mixture. The robust plastic housing is designed to protect the propellant mixture and the igniter during handling and the injection of stemming.

The cartridge is central to the Royex rock breaking system and is offered in a choice of four diameters and a total of 14 standard charge weights.

Propellant mixture

The propellant mix used in the Royex gen 2 has been developed to ensure optimal burn without compromising oxygen balance or density. The base propellant has been carefully selected to ensure the composition achieves optimal burn speeds and gas volumes. The Royex Generation II mixture demonstrates the following advantages,

The Royex Gen II formula has the highest propellant mixture density available in any rock breaking cartridge today. The pour density is 0.86 grams / cm ³ and density inside cartridge (compressed) is 0.92 grams / cm ³.

The propellant used in the Royex Generation II cartridge is a non-recycled propellant specifically selected to ensure rapid burn. The propellant burn rate and heat generation ensures fast and extensive gas generation. This in combination with the hot Maxfire initiation system makes the Royex Generation II cartridge one of the most powerful rock breaking cartridge available on the market today.

Oxygen balance
The propellant mix is chemically designed to produce optimal oxygen balance. It contains a reduced amount of nitrocellulose per gram to minimize the amount of NOx gases. (Gas reports are available on request).

Grain balance
The components in the propellant mixture potentially have different densities and grain sizes. This can cause grain separation in the mixture if not controlled. The components in the Royex Generation II mixture have been sieved, ground, analysed and then tested for grain separation prior to mixing. This means the mixture will always be homogenously mixed and performs consistently regardless of vibrations during transport, storage or handling.

Disposal of the Royex cartridges is a simple process accomplished by removing the base plug with pliers or a similar tool. The propellant can be poured onto sand or other non-combustible surface in a string and ignited using paper or similar means, from a distance of at least 1,5 feet. This procedure should be done at a safe distance from other flammable materials. The remaining parts (including the igniter) of the cartridge may be burnt, preferably outdoors.

Cartridge sizes
